There are two types of enduring power of attorney: Personal care and welfare EPA – you appoint someone to make decisions about your wellbeing, such as where you live and how you will be cared for. Property EPA – you appoint someone or a specialist organisation to take care of your finances and property, such as paying bills and managing assets. An EPA for property means that someone can look after your money and property if you become unable to because of an injury, illness or an age-related condition. It’s a legal document that gives someone you trust the power to look after your money and property if you’re unable to. This person is called your attorney. For example, if you appoint more than 1 attorney, you can say whether they must act together (jointly) or can act separately (severally). If you should lose capacity and there is no Property and Financial Affairs LPA in place, your family and friends will not have automatic authority to make decisions on your behalf with regards to your property and financial affairs.
